Who is Hussain ?

The leader of the small band of men who were martyred in Kerbala was none other than Husain (A), son of Ali bin Abi Talib (A) and grandson of the Holy Prophet (S). Who was Husain? He was the son of Fatima (A) for whom the Holy Prophet (S) said, "Husain is from me and I am from Husain. May God love whoever loves Husain." [1]
The commemoration of Ashura on the 10th of Muharram every yearhttp://bayanbox.ir/view/4750920380230481409/Ashura-158.jpg serves to remind us of the sacrifices of the family of the Prophet (S). It also makes us aware of the people, then and now, who tried to destroy Islam and the family of the Prophet (S) and all that they stood for - as well as those who watched, listened and did nothing

Ashura

Imam Hussain (PBUH) was the third Shia Imam and the prophet Muhammad’s grandson who was martyred and beheaded along with all 72 of his companions on the day of Ashura in Karbala. He left a will before departing from the city of Medina and travelling toward Iraq. You will see A part of Imam Hussain’s will to his brother Muhammad-e-Hanafiya in the above image in three languages:

“I did not rise up for the cause of wickedness, amusement, corruption or oppression, but I rose up to reform the Muslim community of my grandfather [Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)]. I want to promote virtue and prevent vice.”

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) in Ziarat Arbaeen (Visiting on the 40th):

Peace be on the oppressed, the martyr. Peace be on the captives of grief and those killed by the teardrops. O God! Indeed, I bear witness he granted the advice and sacrificed the blood of his heart for Thy sake, in order for him to rescue Thy servants from the ignorance and the perplexity of going astray”.

Imam Hussein went to Mecca and stayed there for four months. He visited different groups and wrote a lot of letters to Kufa, Basra, and to individuals. He went on a pilgrimage to Kaba and he visited the tombs of diseased predecessors; he went to the Aboutalib Cemetery and visited the graves of his great grandfather, Aboutaleb (A.S), and his great grandmother, Khadijeh (SA). He said his prayers right there.
When he learnt about the plots of his enemies, who were trying to kill him, he decided to leave Mecca as a sign of his respect to Kaba. This is the most beautiful respect one could have for the House of God. Imam Hussein did not want to do what Abdullah bin Zubayr did; he took refuge in Kaba, and doing this, he actually disrespected the holy place.
Hussein bin Ali (A.S) treated Abdullah bin Zubayr respectfully and told the people, “Ibn Zubayr wants me to take refuge in the holy shrine, but I would rather be far from the House of God in the time of death. I would rather die next to the Euphrates, than in Kaba.”‌
It is also said that Abdullah bin Zubayr told Imam Hussein (A.S) to stay in Mecca and to take refuge in Kaba. Imam Hussein answered, “This is not a right thing to do. I do not think that I should do that. I would rather get killed in the desert than in Mecca.”‌
With all the respect Imam Hussein accorded to Kaba, he left it, tears in his eyes.

Why did imam Hussain rise up on Ashura? why Ashura happened?

Imam Hussain (PBUH) explained his revolutionary goal as a will which he wrote to his brother, Muhammad bin Al-Hanifiah. The text in the above image is a part of Imam Hussain’s will:

“I did not rise up for the cause of wickedness, amusement, corruption or oppression, but I rose up to reform the Muslim community of my grandfather [Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)]. I want to promote virtue and prevent vice.”

'The days of our youth are the days of our glory'. What hopes and feelings surge in young hearts during this time of life! How every nerve and sinew quivers with the joy of living! But there are some youths to whom the cup of life is dealt in another measure. There are some budding flowers that are destined to be swept away by the hot desert winds before they have the opportunity to bloom. Such was the destiny of Husain's three nephews who were gathered outside the tents on the eve of that eventful day of Muharram.

Qasim, Aun and Muhammad were gathered to discuss the part they would play on the following day in defense of their uncle. There was grim determination writ large on their young faces. They were watching the progress of the moon as it was marching slowly through that cloudless sky, anxiously waiting for the morrow to unfold its event. Each one of them had the desire to go first into the battlefield to shed his blood. Even the few words they exchanged amongst themselves pertained to their anxiety lest their uncle Hussain might hold them back. They were discussing among themselves how to secure the permission of the Imam to march off into the battlefield.

Why is Karbala so inspiring for the people? What secret is latent in it that moves the hearts of people? What is the motivation behind the battle of Ashura, which is still alive after centuries?

We all know the answer to these questions in our hearts, even if we cannot express it. It is like there is an unwritten agreement that keeps our hearts warm for good. We all understand the Great Spirit involved in this epic event and this spirit keeps alive the passion of battle. That is why we have always been strong and firm, although we are the minority. Why do we need to read about it if we all feel it?

What actually were the goals of this battle? How important it is for us to know the answer to this question? Do we really need to make a meaning out of this event for ourselves? Why do we need to know about the main goals of Ashura?

The answer to these questions is that if we do not know the reasons for this battle, we might not be able to understand its message. We could burry its beautiful and adoring ideals in the cemetery of habits. If this happens, we will deviate from the right path.

Imam Hussain(PBUH):

إن لَم یَکُن لَکُم دینٌ و کُنتُم لاتَخافونَ المَعادَ فَکونوا اَحراراً فِی دُنیاکُم؛

If you don not believe in any religion and do not fear the hereafter, then at least be free in your present life.
